Colours in your Website:

Colour in web design is a powerful component, get it right and your site will look complete and organized and it will give a feeling of place and purpose, but get it wrong and visitors will go away before they even look at your content.

Colour Theory

It is important for a web designer to understand the basics of colour theory. To help select colours that will complement each other and work well together.

Be consistent

As mentioned in the opening paragraph if you get colour right your site will look complete. To achieve this, not only do you have to understand colour theory, but you have to be consistent too. Once you have picked harmonious colours you should use these throughout your site and not swap between different combinations.

What do different colours mean?

Different colours provoke different feelings. For instance, red provokes anger and reminds us of fire and heat. Blue is calming and tranquil, it reminds us of things like water.

What feelings do colours provoke?

 Colour codes:

The main way to add colour to your site is to use HEX codes. HEX codes are six digit numbers which tell your browser (Netscape or IE) What colour to use. Web monkey's colour guide is a good collection of various HEX codes and what they look like.

To add a colour to a certain part of your website just use the HTML code:

color="######"

  • replace ###### with your six digit HEX code
  • remember to use the American spelling of colour. (I'm English)

For example, if you wanted to add colour to text insert the code as shown below:

<P><font color="######">Text</font></P>
